Kurbeln statt Schwurbeln (Cranking instead of rambling)

For schools, apprenticeship workshops and youth centers

We come to you! Cranking instead of cranking (Kurbeln statt Schwurbeln) on Tour starting in fall 2023

Kurbeln statt Schwurbeln on Tour is a scientific bicycle cinema that uses short films to get people talking about various topics: What does the sociology of work have to say about diversity in Austrian companies? What does AI have to do with climate change? How was science portrayed in early cinema?

With two bicycles, two students and a short film program, we tour educational institutions throughout Vienna. The electricity for the technical equipment has to be generated by the participants themselves – with muscle power!

Kurbeln statt Schwurbeln on Tour is aimed at young people aged 16 and over.

Looking back

Eight locations, eight films and three bicycles. From May 15th to June 19th, 2023, cinema, science and bicycles came together under the motto Cranking instead of Cranking (Kurbeln statt Schwurbeln), creating an open-air cinema experience of a very special kind, aimed primarily at young people.

Our diverse film program was created as part of a course at the Institute of Theater, Film and Media Studies at the University of Vienna under the direction of Melanie Letschnig. A total of 32 students participated in the creation of the project. With the technical know-how of the Cycle Cinema Club, the electricity was man-made and generated by means of three commercially available bicycles, a generator and our dedicated audience. This allowed us to be both energy self-sufficient and carbon neutral throughout the project.

A review of our film program in German can be found here: Kurbeln statt Schwurbeln Programmübersicht (pdf)

So beautiful was Kurbeln statt Schwurbeln

Many thanks to all who participated and attended!
